My man BRANDO is putting out a pretty epic Mixtape this week and we at Cali hooked him up with a instore gig along with the uploadable link for the Mixtape droppin out later this week. Got to say that Brando aka Sheriffi is prob the smoothest dude i know. Big buddy keeps a smile on his face even through the harshest of Helsinki winter winds. This is a lot more than our fellow Finns put out with their twisted grimes. Sheeeeiitt! Me too though. It's freaking cold. No palmtrees up in this b*tch, nahmsayin... No fruit nowhere, just skeletons.

Anyways, stoked to host Brandos gig in his early paths of his career. Bubbs and me been speculating that it's about time for this kinda sound to be produced in HKI.

Good Things International Vol II.

So, as it's Friday and the Good Things International launch is knocking at our door, waving a four-four with massive amounts of brews to pour. My man Henry from Good Things sent me a pretty nice set of references and insights of his designs and that's what i'm about to share with you dear world. Here we go...

I think there’s something very fascinating about secret societies, brotherhoods and subcultures and their traditions and togetherness, no matter if it’s a kids’ treehouse club, a masonic cult or a medieval templar knights organization.

Back in the days, when I started skateboarding and writing graffiti, I started noticing small details that only a likeminded person would notice, like ink stains on fellow writers’ fingers, or if someone had ollie wear in their left or right shoe, or if he wore a Powell or Blind t-shirt. those were like some sort of a secret handshake that helped us identify ourselves.

Now, when I see someone wearing a Good Things t-shirt, I usually think if he’s aware of the philosophy and symbolism behind the brand, or if he’s just wearing it for the looks. Of course, I hope that he’s a proud ambassador spreading the message of Good Things International. "In hoc signo vinces – In this sign you will conquer."

New Interior done over the weekend!

For those who haven't had the chance to come by and check out the store since last week, we got monumental news for ya'll. We re-shaped the whole interior to freshen up the store. After 7 months of our last set up, we noticed a lot small details that were a bit tricky. So with these details in mind and of course, along with our extremely cultivated taste in style, we just set the whole thing up with a fresh facelift.

Peep the pics and see the new modules. There's no stuff on the shelves in these pictures, which doesn't tell the whole truth about how it looks now, but them modules look pretty damn nice without the stuff too. Kind of like you could put anything on these shelves and it would look real nice. Imagine jewelry or some Rolex watches or some stuff like that. Would look epic. But yo, we stacked all the nice brands we carry on these instead, and yes, the result is pretty awesome!

It's been a while. Shit's been hectic and me and my man Bubbs just trying to steer this ship through the fog. It seems that Helsinki has become a ghost city, nothing new and odd in a way as it's snowy, dark and cold out there. But amidst all the darkness there's also good things in the pipeline too. This upcoming Friday, the 27th, we'll be celebrating the launch of the domestic brand called Good Things International! The celebration is going down at more or less infamous We Got Beef. This in conjunction with Caliroots, ShitXFaced from STHLM and Heineken. Nice palette. There'll also be food from one of the best looking chefs in Mighty FIN!

So, it's all catered, don't dehydrate or starve, nahmsayin... So, as we are one of the partners to be a part of this launch, i want to open up the tight and sealed crate of Henry's artwork. Henry is the creative dude behind Good Things International and we though it would be kind of good to open up the ideas and references about each design. Henry's world is vast of good influences, hence the na,e Good Things International. Brilliant name by the way....

THINK

In the early 90’s when I got into hardcore punk, I came across the abbreviation PMA from a Bad Brains song “Attitude”. Bad Brains is definitely one of the all time greatest bands with so much raw energy, musical talent and positive attitude and has been a huge influence throughout my life.

Later I came across PMA – or Positive Mental Attitude – through other bands, Unity and H2O, just to name a few, and learned more about the author Napoleon Hill who coined the term in his book “Success Through Positive Mental Attitude” which I learned had also been a major influence for Bad Brains vocalist HR.

This T-shirt design is a nod to Napoleon Hill’s most well known book “Think and Grow Rich” original cover art.

Ralph Lauren, a self made fashion designer and millionaire who started his career by selling ties to his fellow students, then moved forward to producing ties of his own design, expanded into clothing and always kept focus on good quality and clean design. If you were into hip hop during the golden years of the 90's, you know the significance of Mr. Lauren. This one is a tribute to RL Polo crest logo and KRS-ONE, teacher and the founder of Temple of Hip-Hop. This masterpiece has inspired Good Things probably more than anything else and you will find a lot of Beastie Boys references in our designs. This t-shirt draws inspiration from a line in “Sound of Science”. I have wanted to do this t-shirt for the past fifteen years, now I finally went through the effort and pulled it off.

It was a nice and long weekend with some brews poured down here and there. Spent some time in our favorite bar, the infamous We Got Beef. This place been on the block for 2 generations now. Originally it sprung up from a pesky little bar called Jump Inn. This bar was raided and taken over by sub cultural zombies in the forms of skaters, hard core dudes, painters and other nocturnal dwellers. One of their regulars, socially talented dude that goes by the name of Sacha Remling, a verbal machine gun and ex-singer in one of Finlands finest Hard Core bands Down My Throat, was just feeling the bar so much that he and a couple of his wet throated homies went and bought the whole concept. It still serves as one of the main platforms when it comes to horny skaters and even hornier finnish sisters trying to find that blessed overnight love partner and other vulgar displays of lust. It's done so with great success and yes, we thank you for that! Especially Mr. Bubbs (last weeks statistics are crushing, nahmean...)

I just wanted to post some signs of patina left in the We Got Beef restroom, done by some interesting people spending interesting times, interesting lives, holding guns and knives, thieves, crooks, heroes, dudes and dudettes. Universal love really exists, especially at WGB around 3.30 a.m on a friday / saturday night....

Nike SB 'Roller Derby' QS - Prehype!

They've teamed up with the culturally heavy hitting skateboarding archeologists that go by the name of 'Made For Skate'. It's a nice and slick premium Nike SB Dunk Low with some epic detailing and a nice and fresh colorway. It's limited to 6 pairs and it'll be released on the 15th worldwide. Don't sleep on these as they are made to skate!

I also snatched some pick from the Made For Skate Website. Sorry about the snatching but thought it'd bring the shoes to their right context, nahmean...

DIAMOND FALL 11 SHOE RELEASE - THIS SATURDAY AT CALI HELSINKI!

Hello world,

This upcoming Saturday the 1st of October, we at CALI Helsinki have the honor to be a part of the release of the much expected Diamond Supply Co. shoe line.

These babies are way slick mixing elements from both the credible skateboard shoe design and the more high end fashion world, mixing in such materials and elements as tiffany and real lamb skin to make a ultra smooth finish and detailing on the shoes. The line looks well finished and has clear influences of a world that some old bastards would be calling the good ol' days (this of course meaning the days when Hip Hop was still Real and skateboarding was more of an underground phenomena than a corporate multimillion business). However, we at CALI, are huge fans of seizing the current moment and especially figuring out the future. Don't get us wrong, we don't hate on history, but we feel that there ain't nuttin' wrong with present or the future either, and that coffee tasted more or less the same back in the days as it does today, nahmean...

Anyways, enough of the that Past / Present / Future contradictions ya heard... Here's some sneak pics on one of our favorite Diamond shoe models called the 'Miner'.

Hey everyone!

There's been tons of request for some girls stuff at our store and me and my man Bubbs have always been a bit confused about how we could make it happen. I mean, we have no clue what chicks are looking for and personally both of us agree that the less clothing, the better, so why on earth would we want to put clothes on girls when we generally want to pick them off. Might sound a bit chauvinistic, but we have done major research and it shows that chicks like that fact and that most of guys think likewise with us, even the poetry boys. Don't get us wrong, it's not all about being naked and obviously there is also the fact that clothing might make a girl way more sexier than being completely nude. Kind of in a way that all secrets should not be revealed at all times.

Just wanted to let you know that we got Polar Skateboards fresh inna di house. Some sweet graphics and tough as nails skateboarding attitude. These cats get a lot of shit done.

Pontus own pro-model got somehow that Neil Blender feel to it's graphics. It's the staff favorite!

Yesyes ya'll! Just wanted to share you some imagery of the fresh and upcoming skatebrand called 7 Inch Skateboards. Owned and operated by Esa from CTRL and legendary Mr. Kivikoski, or Kivi as he is known to most people. They have gathered a pretty damn gnarly pack of skateboard talent to their roaster, including the fresh national champ and amazing skater Nikolai Alin. Congrats to the young chap from yours truly!

/ Inch Skateboards also brings out a pretty fresh line of clothing items along with their visually tantalizing line of skateboard graphics from their multinational graphic team.

Hello,

Wanted to post a small piece about a domestic brand called Grey Market .

This sweet brand is created by long time all around provider Matti Suominen aka Dj Ropeman. With long roots in skateboarding and with mad knowledge in most forms of underground creativity, may it be music, art or the pop culture from these decades. He also has been devoted to fabrics as he studied in the University of Arts in Helsinki where his main was textiles.

Technical with fleece and rip stop patching.

The back details are way smooth.

Big pocket with waterproof sipper in the back. You can easily put a mag or something there and it'll be real smooth when pushing the pedals on your bike-o. More ergonomics.

Plenty of space and nice detailing with the zipper lined kangaroo pocket as well.

Also, the hood on this baby is perfectly cut if comes to biking and some rugged weather.

The Grey Market Henley has an equal quality tailored feel to it as the Anorak. Nice detailing with signal orange stitching...

gives a nice frame to the whole.

Last weeks Saturday, the 23rd of July, we had the great honor to host a little pre-release event at CALI Helsinki for Gracias new EP-Release. Young Nada was puzzling together the beats and putting some DJ-Action to work while talented and upcoming MC Gracias laid out some proper lyrics on top of Nada's joints. It all molded out to be the nicest instore gig we've had so far. This was all put together as a warm up before the actual release party at YK-Club and the SLAP!-club we're supporting. Nice concept as a whole.

CALI FRIED PERUS BREWS - AFTER BURNERS...

So, last weekend was the Cali Fried Perus Brews event down at the Kamppi plaza. After a couple of days straight up organizing mayhem, doing burger steaks until 5 in the morning, driving a car that doesn't run properly nor has insurance and all the other twists and turns in between, we finally had the sun out, our frying pans sizzling, the burgers goin, cheddar rollin, onion ring poppin type-o-action in full blazin effect. Our main man, Deeli from Kingpin Magazine was hawk eying the action. Sharp cat with grain never down the drain, he has made a pretty schmoove selection of our friendly weekend mayhem event.

been awhile since last time. i guess summer came and no person can't be blamed for a little slack from the computer as the weather is just brilliant. anyways, we just got a real sweet delivery from Anders Dahlberg over at bikeid from Swden. We got two of their bikes, one for display and one for our own pedaling endeavors. We have hard times figuring if we wanna ride the crisp and colorful one or just roll with the black Tombstoned model that Jussi created for us.

Last Saturday was pretty goddamn action packed. On Saturday we had the Nike SB Eric Koston Shoe release at the store with DJ's Jaffa & Oki playing old skatevideo tunes, shoes and some brews. Not too much footage of the release, but instead Nike SB rider Dino went and ollied this pile of decks , switch...

After the mayhem Jaffa was clever enough to mix it up with a sudden second screening of the new Happy Hour Skate movie ''Ei liity mihinkään''. Got to say that the movie was pretty damn insane and i suggest you get it so i don't have to write more about it. Peeps were stoked!

And after all this was wrapped up, me and my boy Bubbs hit the Final Assault & Terveet Kädet gig in Semi Final. They had a tour across some Finnish cities that i can't remember anymore. Terveet Kädet is straight up legend status in Finland and all over the world. They've been around since your father was still listening to Bogart Co. These guys, both Final Assault & Terveet Kädet, get our 110% support. They give us hope for our shining and bright future, even though it might be crusty as we grow old and dusty. Thanks for the hook up Aleksi and once more, thanks Anders for the Genelecs.

Hello World!

First off, sorry for the lateness on the blogging tip. It's been a rough ride for 8 weeks for yours truly and we're still new to things everyday. Everything has been a blast ever since we started and this project became the journey and it didn't leave us cold when now looking at the results. Before i go ahead i wanted to share you all some pictures of our journey with getting the space ready. Just some highlights we had along the 8 weeks of a lot of physical work and fun times....

In the beginning sh*t was truly messed up.

This is just when we had torn down and took out 32 m3 of junk and i can tell you that this moment was blessed...

Felt like standing on the moon...

This one's special too. We took down the papers from our windows first time in a month...

Then after we finally got all the surfaces done, it was time to get busy with building up. The way we wanted to have it, not somebody others stuff around... Pekka was the man to get all this going like a swizz watch. Lazer Beamz all over!

And not to forget the Erco Series that we installed already earlier. Skynet!

And after all the building, cleaning, fixing, setting up, getting in deliveries and a million other things to do, we barely got it ready in time. We slept little and were pretty worn out but happy just minutes after we opened the door at our grand opening. The grand opening is the next blog post, so sit tight and relax and enjoy a gruesome picture of yours truly, us at the opening.
